How To Clean Out A Hamster Cage

Are you concerned with the health and fitness of your hamster?  Learning how to clean a hamster cage is a necessary activity that will promote to better health for your hamster as well as eliminate the fumes that some from a dirty cage.  As cages get dirty sometimes you may notice a bad smell coming out of the structure. If you want to own your pet for a long time, you need to keep its living quarters extremely clean. This will ensure that the pet is healthy at all times.

There are various steps that that you should follow to guide you when cleaning the a cage for your pet.

Step 1 - Gather the cleaning necessary cleaning supplies before you start cleaning.  Having your hamster outside of the cage for an extended amount of time may bring about stress  onto the hamster.   Having the cleaning supplies on hand will allow you to start cleaning right away. First you should ensure that hot water is readily available. Fill up a bucket with the hot water and proceed to clean the cage as soon as the hamster is removed. Mild soap and a sponge are also requirements when doing the cleaning. An old toothbrush can be used in place of a sponge for scrubbing purposes.


Step 2 - Find a place to house your hamster while you are cleaning the hamster and remove the hamster from the cage.  It would be a shame to lose the hamster while trying to clean its surroundings.  Make sure that you place him in a clean and dry area before you proceed to do the cleaning. You are supposed also to make sure that the place you transfer him is enclosed. This is for security purposes since he can decide to walk around and probably encounter an accident on his way.


Step 3 - Dispose of old bedding.  The first step you should take after gathering all the cleaning materials is to dispose the old bedding. You may want to use gloves during this step.  Pick up the bedding directly and dump it in a paper bag. You may alternatively decide to take it to the dust bin straight away.

Step 4 - After doing away with the soiled bedding, you can now start cleaning the accessories within the cage. You need to dismantle the structure. Smaller parts can be immersed in hot water directly to kill the bacteria. Soak them for a while to ensure that all bacteria are killed. Alternatively, you can scrub each part of the structure with the old toothbrush until they appear clean.

Step 5 - Take note of the bacteria that hides in cracks and in wire walls. Stains should also be removed by thorough scrubbing. After cleaning, you are expected to rinse it still with hot water. A towel is needed to dry the whole structure. You can use a air drier to expel all the water within the whole structure.

Step 6 - It is now time to replace the bedding after the structure has completely dried. Make sure that your hamster can nest well on his bedding without any problem. Consider using torn papers in order to keep the bedding soft.

Step 7 - Put the accessories back in the cage. Make sure you do not alter the initial arrangement that your pet has got used to. Ensure that the water bottle and food dish are filled up with water and food respectively. Do not mix fresh food with the one initially in the dish. Let your pet enjoy fresh food and water this time round.  You should make sure that all the accessories are in good condition. Everything within the structure should be working as it should. Replace the water bottle immediately if you find it is leaking.

After doing all that, you can then return your pet back to its hamster cage. It will actually enjoy the new and clean environment. Try to internalize these steps on how to clean out a hamster cage and you will create a healthy environment around you and your pet.
